Dirt Work in Pleasant View, TN

Dirt Work · Pleasant View, TN

Dirt moved where it is needed and shaped to drain

Dirt work is moving and shaping the ground with a machine. Phillips Land Services does dirt work around Pleasant View with a compact track loader. We fill low spots, spread fill dirt and topsoil, shape swales and backfill. On many lots it is the next step after land clearing in Pleasant View.

Most dirt work starts with a problem you can see. A yard is full of ruts after the builder leaves, or a low spot holds water after every rain. Jobs run from a few hours of machine time to a whole lot. Call or text (931) 265-1151, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • Fill dirt spread to raise low spots and holes
  • Topsoil spread over the fill for a new yard
  • Cut and fill for paths and small pads
  • Drainage swales shaped to carry runoff away from the house
  • Backfill pushed in and shaped once the builder is done
  • Cleanup of dirt piles and truck ruts after a build
  • Dirt moved from a high spot to a low one on the same lot

What is the difference between dirt work and grading?

Dirt work moves dirt. It cuts a high spot down and carries that dirt to the low ground. Backfill and cleanup after a build are dirt work too. Grading is the finish: the final slope that sends rain off the lot.

Most jobs need both, in that order. When the work is mostly shaping a yard, land grading and yard leveling covers it. A pad for a house or a barn starts with site preparation for a new build.

Footings and utility trenches take an excavator, and an excavation contractor quotes that work. Our track loader handles the dirt on top, before those trades start and after they finish.

Fill dirt spreading and topsoil: what goes where

Fill dirt is subsoil, the layer that sits under the topsoil. It carries little organic matter, so it packs down and holds its shape. Cheatham County's grading rules say fill must be suitable fill, or rock and dirt only. It goes in thin layers, each one packed before the next.

Topsoil is the loose top layer that grass grows in. It goes on last, spread over the fill. In a new Pleasant View subdivision, the town's rules keep topsoil on the residential lots. It gets spread back to give at least six inches of cover.

Backfill is dirt pushed back against a new foundation once the builder's work is done. Loose backfill settles, so it goes in packed and shaped to fall away from the house.

Dirt work on Highland Rim ground around Pleasant View

Pleasant View sits on the Highland Rim, and the USDA soil survey shows two common kinds of ground here. On the slopes, gravelly silt loam lies over red clay, with chert left from weathered limestone. On the flats, soils like Dickson and Taft have a dense layer 18 to 36 inches down. Water soaks through that layer slowly.

That changes how a wet spot gets fixed. A load of fill can push the water over to the next low spot. A swale, a wide and shallow ditch, carries that water away from the house and the low ground. Outside town limits, Cheatham County requires a grading permit if cut or fill changes water flow next door.

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 averages for Nashville put rain at about 50 inches a year. Spring is the wettest season and fall the driest. Soaked ground ruts under a machine, so dirt work waits for ground that can carry it. We do dirt work across our service area, about 30 miles around Pleasant View.

FAQ

Dirt Work Questions, Answered

Common questions about dirt work around Pleasant View and the towns between Nashville and Clarksville. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (931) 265-1151

What does a dirt work contractor do?
A dirt work contractor moves dirt from where it is to where it needs to be, then shapes it. That covers fill for low spots, topsoil for a new yard, swales, backfill and cleanup after a build. We do it with a compact track loader and a bucket, the same machine behind our forestry mulching.
Can you clean up the dirt left after a build?
Yes. A finished build often leaves dirt piles and truck ruts behind. We spread the extra dirt into the ruts and low spots, then shape the yard to drain. The builder's debris goes first, since Pleasant View's subdivision rules bar burying it on a new lot.
Do you bring in fill dirt and topsoil?
Some jobs balance out with dirt already on the property, cut from a high spot into a low one. When a job needs more, we bring in fill dirt or topsoil for it. That goes in the written quote.
How much does dirt work cost?
The price follows how much dirt moves and how far it travels across the lot. Fill or topsoil brought in, tight access, wet ground and chert all add to it. So does a finish smooth enough for grass. We look at the job and put the quote in writing, so call or text (931) 265-1151.
Does dirt work need an 811 call first?
Yes. Tennessee's one-call law covers grading, backfilling and ditching, along with digging. The person responsible for the work calls Tennessee 811 at least three working days ahead, and no more than ten. Private lines, like power to a barn or a water line from the meter, are the owner's to have located.
Do I need a permit to bring in fill dirt?
Outside town limits, Cheatham County's grading permit form lists fill of 100 cubic yards or more on one site. In Nashville, Metro Water Services issues grading permits, and more than 100 cubic yards on a lot needs one. In both places, fill in a flood zone needs approval before any dirt moves. Other towns set their own rules, and we point you to the right codes office.
