Forestry Mulching

Much of north and west Nashville is still rough, wooded country. Metro's plan gives Joelton the highest share of tree cover among Nashville's 14 planning areas. Left alone, the ground under those trees fills in with brush and saplings. A lot that sits a few summers turns into a wall of privet and briars.
This side of Nashville is part of our service area. Phillips Land Services does land clearing in Nashville with a compact track loader and a forestry mulcher head. That is forestry mulching: the head grinds brush and trees up to about 7 inches thick where they stand. Call or text (931) 265-1151 about your lot.
Tell us about the brush, field, yard or driveway and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Joelton sits up on the Highland Rim. Metro's community plan says its hills and soils resemble the Cumberland Plateau. Its southern part is steep, heavily wooded ground with narrow ridges and valleys. Its northern part is level to rolling, cut here and there by steep ravines.
Metro's plan puts about half of the Bordeaux and Whites Creek area on slopes of 20 percent or more. Most of that steep ground is in Whites Creek, where federal soil maps show gravelly, cherty Bodine soil. The plan says tree cover holds many of those unstable soils in place. It also points to the many landslides in Davidson County after the 2010 flood.
On ground like this, forestry mulching leaves the chips spread over the soil as cover. Trees thicker than about 7 inches are a job for a tree service. We look at the slope and the way in before we quote. If a slope is too steep for the machine, we tell you at the start.
Nashville and Davidson County share one Metro government, so Metro's rules cover this whole side of town. Metro Water Services issues grading permits through its Stormwater Division. Metro defines grading to include removing ground cover, so clearing a lot can count.
Jobs past 10,000 square feet of disturbed ground or 100 cubic yards of material fall outside Metro's exemptions. Yard grading also loses its exemption past an 18-inch grade change. In a designated floodplain, the exemptions do not apply. Metro's stormwater staff make the call for your lot, and we point you to them before the job.
A building project that disturbs an acre or more needs coverage under TDEC's construction stormwater permit. New development sites in Nashville must keep water quality buffers along streams and other waters. A new home or garage needs a building permit from Metro Nashville Codes. When the ground needs shaping after clearing, that is our land grading and yard leveling work.
Bells Bend sits in a wide bend of the Cumberland River, with Scottsboro to the north. Metro's plan keeps this corner rural, with farmland and floodplain backed by steep woods. Bells Bend Park alone covers 808 acres of rolling river bottom, where old fields and fence lines remain.
Fields here need cutting once or twice a year to stay open. Bush hogging keeps pasture and hay ground from growing back into brush. Where a field has already grown up in saplings, the mulcher takes it back first.
Whites Creek and Eatons Creek wind through this side of town on their way to the Cumberland. Low ground in the river bends sits in FEMA's mapped floodplain. Before any dirt moves on that low ground, check with Metro Water Services.
Bordeaux is mostly gently rolling or level ground. In the Bordeaux ZIP, the median home was built in 1977, per the Census. About three in four homes there are single-family houses. Metro's plan also counted about 30 percent of the wider area as vacant residential land.
With about 50 inches of rain a year, an empty lot here grows up fast. Brush clearing opens it back up so you can see the ground again. New homes keep going up too: the Census Bureau counted permits for 2,662 single-family homes across Nashville in 2024. Site preparation for a new house clears the footprint and sets a level pad.
Closer in, shops line Clarksville Pike and Trinity Lane, and downtown is mostly pavement. Snow is rare here: the 30-year normal at the Nashville airport is under 5 inches a year. When a snow does stick, we push parking lots and private drives clear with the track loader. That is our snow removal work for businesses and churches.
