Leave a Dickson lot alone for a few summers and it fills in with briars and saplings. Fence rows thicken, and the back corner of the yard disappears. Clearing it raises a second question: what happens to all that brush? The City of Dickson's brush guidelines say that when you hire a contractor, the contractor disposes of it.
Phillips Land Services handles land clearing around Pleasant View, and Dickson is part of our service area. Our answer to the brush is forestry mulching. Our compact track loader carries a mulcher head that grinds brush and trees up to about 7 inches across. Call or text (931) 265-1151, and we will look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Dickson sits on the Highland Rim, and USDA soil maps put most of the town on Sengtown gravelly silt loam. That soil formed from cherty limestone, so chert gravel runs all through it. It covers ground from gentle rises to very steep hillsides.
The USDA rates runoff on this soil from medium to very high. Bare dirt on a Dickson slope can wash after a hard rain. That mud heads for ditches and creeks such as Jones Creek, which starts on the north side of town. The city's latest annual stormwater report says most of its discharge complaints were about sediment from construction sites.
On flatter ridges, the same maps show the Dickson series, Tennessee's state soil, first defined in this county in 1923. It has a firm layer 18 to 36 inches down that slows water. Where a yard stays soggy or needs reshaping, land grading sets the slope so water runs away from the house.
Dickson counted 16,058 people in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau's latest estimate is 17,051. Census survey numbers show nearly three in four homes are detached single-family houses. The median home in town was built in 1980.
Highway 70 runs through town as Henslee Drive, and its business route follows College Street. Main Street carries Highway 48 north toward Charlotte, the county seat. Highway 46 runs south to I-40. East of town, Highway 70 passes Montgomery Bell State Park, 3,850 acres of rolling hills in Burns.
Census permit data show the city authorized 122 new single-family homes in the most recent full year, up from 70 the year before. Outside town limits, Dickson County authorized 243 more, about twice the city's number. For a new house or barn, site preparation clears the footprint and sets a rough grade for the builder. Out there, the county's building permit checklist asks for a septic permit or proof of sewer.
Inside city limits, the City of Dickson Planning and Zoning Department issues building permits. The city's stormwater program posts a grading permit application, and its ordinance covers land disturbance anywhere in the city. The ordinance also says a development that disturbs over 1 acre needs state coverage through TDEC.
The city's driveway and culvert permit asks for an erosion plan. The same form lets the owner ask the city to install the culvert, at the owner's cost. It also says the first 20 feet from the edge of the road must be hard-surfaced. That apron is paving work for another trade, and a gravel driveway cut-in past it is our work.
Outside the city, the Dickson County Highway Department wants a driveway permit before a new drive joins a county road. Its form sets a 20-foot minimum width and has the applicant pay for and install any culvert. Before any digging or grading, call Tennessee 811 at least three working days ahead.
From October 15 through May 15, Tennessee requires a burn permit for debris pile fires. The permit comes from the Tennessee Division of Forestry. Some cities and counties add stricter rules of their own. Inside city limits, ask the City of Dickson before you light a pile.
Roadside pickup has limits, too. The city takes one tree cut into pieces under 6 feet long and charges a bulk refuse fee for more.
Forestry mulching turns brush into mulch right where it stands. The job ends with a layer of mulch over the soil instead of bare dirt or a burn pile. On Dickson's chert hillsides, that ground cover matters.
