Brush clearing gets an overgrown yard or lot back under control. Briars and privet fill the back corner. Honeysuckle and vines climb the fence row until the property line disappears. We clear that growth with a compact track loader running a forestry mulcher head or a brush cutter.
This is the yard and lot side of our land clearing around Pleasant View. When thick growth covers whole acres of woods, that job is forestry mulching. Brush removal starts where the growth gets in your way. That is often the back edge of a yard or a fence row lost under vines. Briars, privet, honeysuckle and small saplings make up the usual mix. Creek banks and property lines close in the same way.
The track loader runs a brush cutter or a forestry mulcher head, whichever fits the growth. The mulcher head grinds brush and saplings up to about 6 to 7 inches across where they stand. Trees bigger than that are a job for a tree service.
It helps to mark the property line before we start, if you know where it runs. Point out anything hidden in the brush, like old fence wire or a well head.
Privet first came here as a hedge plant. The Tennessee Division of Forestry says it escaped from yards and now grows wild. The Tennessee Invasive Plant Council lists Chinese privet and bush honeysuckle as invasive plants found across the state. Japanese honeysuckle and multiflora rose are on that list too.
Privet often forms dense thickets along fence rows, the council says. Bush honeysuckle leafs out earlier in spring than native plants and holds its leaves later into fall. That head start lets it crowd out the plants around it.
Late fall and winter make this brush easy to spot. Privet keeps much of its green through the cold months. Bush honeysuckle holds its red berries into winter, after other shrubs lose their leaves.
Underbrush clearing takes the undergrowth out from under the trees you want to keep. The bigger trees stay standing, and you can see into the woods again. You get the shady corner of the yard back and keep the shade.
After brush clearing, a layer of mulch covers the ground where the brush stood. It shields bare dirt from rain and breaks down over time. Saplings are ground off low, and their roots stay in the soil.
Soft ground can show tracks after the machine leaves. Smoothing ruts and low spots afterward is land grading work. If the lot is being cleared to build on, that job is site preparation.
