Land Clearing, Forestry Mulching and Dirt Work in Springfield

Census figures show about four in ten homes in Springfield were built before 1980. An older lot can hide a fence row or a back corner grown up in briars and saplings. Past the city limits, an idle pasture along Highway 49 or 431 can turn to brush in a few seasons. Inside the city, the fire department says it issues very few burn permits.

Phillips Land Services does land clearing in Springfield, with forestry mulching as our main method. Springfield is part of our service area, about 15 road miles from Pleasant View by Highway 49. Our track loader runs a mulcher head that grinds brush and small trees right where they stand. Call or text (931) 265-1151, and we will look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Brush pickup rules for an overgrown Springfield lot

The city collects brush from homes once a month, in two districts split by the railroad tracks. Each branch can be up to 8 feet long and 75 pounds. The city does not collect tree trunks or stumps.

City rules say hired help must haul away the yard waste its own work makes. The city tells residents to check that hauling is in the price when they hire tree work. So the brush from a hired clearing job is the contractor's to handle.

Our brush clearing work handles it on the spot. The mulcher head grinds briars and saplings into mulch that stays on your ground.

What Springfield's soil means for forestry mulching and dirt work

The USDA soil survey maps more of Springfield as Sengtown gravelly silt loam than any other soil. It formed from cherty limestone and carries chert gravel near the surface. Much of it sits on 5 to 20 percent slopes, where the survey rates runoff from medium to very high.

The survey lists oak and hickory as the forest on uncleared Sengtown ground. Forestry mulching grinds the brush and small trees and spreads the mulch on the slope. That cover stays on the ground after the machine leaves.

On the broad, flatter ridges, Dickson silt loam has a dense layer called a fragipan. Water moves through it slowly, so a low spot can stay soggy after a wet spell. Dirt work can fill that spot or shape a swale that carries water away.

Which offices handle clearing and grading permits in Springfield?

Inside the city limits, the Engineering Department is the first call. The city says most land disturbance work needs a Land Disturbance Permit. It asks you to call Engineering before work starts, and the office decides if you need one.

Public Works handles a Grading and Erosion Control Permit. The city says it is for anyone disturbing more than 10,000 square feet of land. The Street Department permits any driveway work in the city right-of-way. That includes a gravel driveway cut-in off a city street.

Springfield is the county seat, so the county permit office is in town too. Outside the city, Robertson County Planning issues building permits. A new building there needs a driveway permit from the county Highway Department or the state. These offices answer the permit question for each lot, and we point you to the right one.

Where Springfield is growing and what a new build needs

Springfield counted 18,782 people in the 2020 Census. The Census Bureau's latest estimate is 20,090. About 36 percent of the city's homes went up in 2000 or later.

The city's growth plan, adopted in 2024, steers new growth toward the central core and key crossroads. It also calls for a rural edge along Highways 41, 431 and 76. It says the urban growth boundary holds enough land for now.

A new house or shop starts with site preparation on the lot. We clear the footprint and rough grade a level pad with access for the builder. On a sloped lot, a level pad takes some cut and fill. For a building site, TDEC's construction stormwater permit generally starts at one acre of disturbed ground.

Questions We Hear Around Springfield

A few of the questions we hear most around Springfield. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (931) 265-1151

Can I burn the brush after clearing land in Springfield?
Inside the city limits, any open burning needs a permit from the Springfield Fire Department. Outside the city, the state requires a burn permit for debris piles from October 15 to May 15. The Tennessee Division of Forestry issues it, and some counties and towns have stricter rules. With forestry mulching, the brush ends up as mulch on the ground instead of in a burn pile.
What does land clearing cost in Springfield?
Thick brush, bigger trees, steep slopes and tight access all add machine time. Much of Springfield sits on gravelly hillsides, so slope often matters here. Whether the brush stays as mulch or gets hauled off also changes the price. We look at the lot first, then put the quote in writing.
What if my Springfield land runs down to a creek?
Sulphur Fork runs past Springfield, and the creek bottoms in town map as soils that flood now and then. Inside the city, grading or filling in a mapped floodplain needs a permit through Community Development. Stream work usually needs permits from TDEC, the state environment agency, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. FEMA's flood map shows whether your lot sits in the floodplain.
Do you work outside the Springfield city limits?
Yes. Springfield is part of our service area, and so is the farm country around it. That includes Coopertown, Greenbrier, Cedar Hill, Cross Plains and Adams. Pleasant View sits at the center of the area we cover.
How big a tree can your forestry mulcher handle?
Our mulcher head takes brush and trees up to about 6 to 7 inches across. On a mixed lot, the big trees can stay while we clear the growth under them. Bigger trees that need to come down are work for a tree service, which is another trade.
