Bush Hogging in Pleasant View, TN

Bush Hogging · Pleasant View, TN

Overgrown fields and pastures cut back to open ground

Bush hogging cuts down a field or pasture that has grown up in tall grass and weeds. Some people call it brush hogging, and it is the same work. We run a rotary brush cutter on our compact track loader. It takes down briars and light brush too, and the cuttings drop back on the ground.

Bush hogging fits a hay field that got away, a weedy pasture, an overgrown lot or a roadside strip. We cut ground once to win it back, or once or twice a year to keep it open. It is part of our land clearing around Pleasant View and the towns within about 30 miles. Call or text (931) 265-1151, and we look at the field and put the quote in writing.

Pasture mowing on Cheatham County hay and cattle land

Hay and pasture cover a big share of Cheatham County's farm ground. In the 2022 Census of Agriculture, hay was the county's top crop, on 8,929 acres. The same census counted 9,668 acres of pasture and 5,856 cattle and calves.

UT Extension says the main pasture and hay grasses in Tennessee are tall fescue and orchardgrass. When that grass gets weak, weeds like broomsedge move in. A UT Extension forage specialist calls broomsedge a symptom of a weak stand. That guidance starts with a soil test and calls a healthy, well-fed stand one of the best tools against it.

The cut itself helps too. The same guidance says a summer mowing, as seedheads show, can weaken broomsedge and stop the seed. It also warns against mowing tall fescue too short.

When is a field too overgrown for bush hogging?

The brush cutter handles tall grass, weeds, briars and light brush. A field cut once or twice a year stays in that range. Skip a few years, and saplings like sweetgum and red maple move in. Once they thicken into small trees, the field has gone past bush hogging.

That ground needs forestry mulching, where the mulcher head grinds trees up to about 6 to 7 inches across. Our track loader runs both the brush cutter and the mulcher head. We match the tool to each part of the field. Thick brush along a yard edge or a creek bank is brush clearing work.

Field mowing at the right time of year

The best month to cut depends on how you use the ground. A cattle pasture and a deer field want different timing. Tell us how you use yours, and we set the date around it.

A stockpiled pasture is grass left standing to graze later, so you need less stored feed. UT Extension says to clip a pasture you plan to stockpile by the end of August. It says mowing takes off old growth and weeds, and new shoots come up fresh and leafy.

Wildlife ground runs on a different clock. UT wildlife specialists say mowing in the growing season destroys fawning and nesting cover, and often fawns and nests. When a wildlife field needs mowing, they advise late winter, just before spring green-up.

FAQ

Bush Hogging Questions, Answered

Common questions about bush hogging around Pleasant View and the towns between Nashville and Clarksville. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (931) 265-1151

How much does bush hogging cost?
The price depends on the acreage and how tall and thick the growth is. Saplings, slopes, rocks and hidden stumps slow the cut. Jobs run from a few hours of machine time up to a full property. We look at the field first, then put the quote in writing.
Is bush hogging the same as mowing a lawn?
No. Bush hogging is field cutting for tall growth on rough ground, and it leaves a rougher finish. It suits a field or pasture that has grown past a mower. A yard that needs a neat weekly trim is a job for a lawn care company.
What happens to the grass and brush you cut?
It stays on the field. The brush cutter chops it and drops it where it grew. The cuttings dry out and break down into the soil over time.
What should I do before you cut my field?
Tell us about anything that hides in tall grass, like stumps, big rocks, old fence wire or a well head. Mark what you can with a flag or a stake. Soft, wet ground is worth a mention too.
Can you cut the same field every year?
Yes. Acreage that needs a cut once or twice a year is part of our bush hogging work. A yearly cut keeps saplings knocked back. Call or text ahead of the month you want, and we put your field on the schedule.
Do you bush hog outside Pleasant View?
Yes. Pleasant View sits at the center of our service area, which runs about 30 miles around. That takes in Clarksville, Springfield, Dickson, Ashland City and the north and west side of Nashville. The full list is on our service areas page.
