A gravel driveway needs firm ground under it and a crown on top. Phillips Land Services cuts in new gravel driveways and grades the stone with a compact track loader. We also refresh and regrade old driveways that have gone to ruts and potholes.
Pleasant View sits at the center of our service area, which runs about 30 miles around town. That reaches Clarksville, Springfield, Dickson and the north and west side of Nashville. On a grown-up lot, land clearing around Pleasant View opens the route first. Call or text (931) 265-1151 to talk about your driveway.
Tell us about the brush, field, yard or driveway and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
A driveway cut-in builds a new gravel drive where none exists yet. Brush and small trees on the route get mulched in place first. Then the bucket strips the soft topsoil and roots down to firm ground.
Stone needs that firm footing. The Federal Highway Administration's gravel roads guide says organic matter in topsoil is never good for a road surface. Next the bed gets shaped with a crown, a slight rise down the middle. The guide recommends about half an inch of rise per foot from the edge, near 4 percent.
Then the stone goes down and gets graded smooth with the track loader. Before any digging, Tennessee law calls for notice to Tennessee 811 at least three working days ahead.
The spot where a new driveway meets the road has its own rules. The entrance should match the edge of the road. Ditch water along the road has to keep flowing too, so some entrances need a culvert pipe.
Outside town limits, the Cheatham County highway department issues the driveway permit for a county road. It sizes any culvert pipe the entrance needs and inspects it once it is in. On a state route like Highway 49, state law requires a TDOT entrance permit, and the property owner applies. TDOT's driveway manual says gravel can be enough for a home entrance, unless rain would wash it onto the road.
On a Cheatham County road, a drive steeper than 10 percent needs its first 50 feet paved or in concrete. Ashland City and Coopertown want the first stretch paved where a new drive meets a paved road. That apron is a job for a paving or concrete contractor, and the gravel picks up behind it. Pleasant View issues its own driveway permit and Clarksville an access permit, so ask the office for your road first.
Traffic pushes stone out of the wheel paths and off to the edges. The crown flattens, and water starts to sit on the driveway. Potholes form in those wet spots, and long wet spells bring ruts.
Driveway grading puts the shape back. The track loader cuts down the ruts and pulls stone back from the edges to the middle. The driveway gets its crown again, so rain runs off the sides.
A spot that keeps rutting often sits on soft, wet ground. One fix is to dig out the weak, wet soil and rebuild the spot with clean stone that drains. If water from a higher yard runs onto the driveway, yard grading can turn it aside.
